As part of the SHAPE Capital team, you will act as the subject matter expert for compliance and operational risk within the organization. Your primary responsibility will be to ensure the company and its employees are in compliance with regulatory requirements across various jurisdictions.  You will also assist with the company’s loan operations and will have opportunities and exposure in other parts of the business. 

In this role, you will effectively promote a culture of compliance for our organization and will be an integral part of ensuring the company complies with external regulatory and legal requirements as well as internal policies and bylaws and be a trusted advisor to SHAPE Capital’s leadership team.

You will be working on a close-knit team of experienced real estate professionals and be provided with exposure to a wide variety of commercial mortgage loans.  This is a full-time, in-office position located in downtown Vancouver, with some flexibility.  Please note, the position’s title may be adjusted depending on the candidate’s experience and education.

Primary Job Responsibilities

Compliance & Risk Management Responsibilities

  • Ensure the organization and its mortgage investments are compliant under the regulations and policies for mortgage brokers in the various jurisdictions that we operate in across Canada and the United States (BCFSA, RECA, FSRA, etc.)
  • Oversee AML / KYC due diligence and ensure proper documentation is maintained
  • Identify and manage areas of operational, legal, regulatory, and reputational risk for the organization
  • Identify and report non-compliance instances to management and work with the team to correct the issues as they arise
  • Contribute, recommend, and implement business processes and work practices that maintain or improve organizational compliance while meeting functional requirements and maintaining business continuity
  • Maintain up to date knowledge of new and proposed regulatory requirements, ensuring that organizational systems, processes, and management practices comply with each jurisdiction’s regulations and policies
  • Build risk and compliance awareness and establish a risk-informed culture within our organization
  • Create compliance and risk management job aids to ensure accurate policies and procedures are documented for the organization
  • Ensure the team understands regulatory changes and updates as they arise

Other Key Accountabilities

  • Keep track of the team’s mortgage broker license requirements and registrations, and ensure they are reviewed and renewed ahead of expiry and educational requirements are fulfilled
  • Manage the organization’s EMD registrations and compliance requirements in each jurisdiction that SHAPE Capital is registered within Canada
  • As needed, assist the loan operations team with monthly fundings, statements, and reports
  • Monitor and implement quality assurance standards and procedures
  • Identify gaps and recommend opportunities to improve and streamline departmental processes
  • Be a team player and ready to work in a fast-paced and entrepreneurial environment


Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of commercial real estate, mortgage investments, and lending as it applies to financial institutions or private mortgage lenders
  • Knowledge and experience with regulatory requirements in multiple jurisdictions in Canada and the United States preferred
  • Experience reviewing and documenting regulatory requirements and identifying the resulting operational impacts on the organization
  • Ability to exercise judgement, initiative, and discretion
  • Detail-oriented, self-motivated, and ability to work independently
  • Capable of handling multiple tasks with multiple projects and timelines
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office suite (PowerPoint, Excel, and Word)
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills

Required Training and Experience

  • Bachelor of Commerce, Business Administration, or Economics preferred (specializing in Finance, Accounting, Economics or Real Estate)
  • Several years of experience in the financial services, real estate finance, or mortgage lending industry
  • Completion of the Exempt Market Proficiency course, or ability to take a certified Exempt Market Proficiency course
  • Anti-Money Laundering Specialist certification is an asset
